COPC named 2025 Wellbeing First Champion for Supporting Health Worker Wellbeing

8/13/2025

Central Ohio Primary Care (COPC) has been named a 2025 Wellbeing First Champion by ALL IN: Wellbeing First for Healthcare, a national coalition advocating for the mental health and wellbeing of America’s health workers.

This designation means COPC has verified that its licensure and credentialing applications are free from invasive or stigmatizing questions about mental health care. This change allows doctors, nurses, and other health workers to seek the help they need without fear of professional consequences.

“This designation by the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation is one example of the many ways our well-being team is working to reduce burnout and better support our clinicians,” said Dr. Stephanie Costa, Physician Well-Being and Leadership Coach at COPC. “We want them to be able to provide the best care possible to patients while enjoying a career in medicine that is both fulfilling and sustainable.”

COPC Pediatrician and Director of Physician Well-Being Dr. Mary-Lynn Niland added, “Open conversations about mental health can save lives. When healthcare organizations create a culture where physicians know it’s safe to ask for support, we not only protect their well-being, but we also strengthen the healthcare system as a whole.”

Why it Matters to Everyone

Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals are at twice the risk of suicide compared to the general population, often because they’re afraid to seek mental health treatment. In many states and institutions, outdated questions about past mental health care on job or licensing applications can cause health workers to hide their struggles or elect not to seek care. “Too often, stigma and outdated policies create a culture of silence,” said Corey Feist, co-founder of ALL IN and CEO of the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation. “When health workers can’t get help, we all suffer—because their ability to care for us depends on being able to care for themselves.”

As a Wellbeing First Champion, COPC has committed to maintaining these changes and communicating clearly to staff that it's safe and encouraged to get mental health support. The designation must be renewed annually, ensuring lasting accountability.
